William Verne McGough is a Shareholder who leads the firm’s Midlands office in Columbia, South Carolina. His practice focuses on personalized estate planning, tax controversy, tax collection matters, and tax efficient corporate planning for professionals and closely held businesses. Verne earned his J.D. and International MBA from the University of South Carolina and later obtained his Master of Laws in Taxation from Boston University. He is certified as a Specialist in both Probate, Estate Planning and Trust Law and Tax Law by the South Carolina Bar, where he previously served as Chair of the Tax Law Section. He is active in the American Bar Association, South Carolina Bar, Richland County Bar Association, and Columbia Estate Planning Council. His recognitions include The Best Lawyers in America and Columbia Business Monthly Legal Elite of the Midlands. An accomplished legal author, Verne has written extensively on tax and estate planning topics. Outside the office, he enjoys time with his wife Marie and their children and is active at First Baptist Church.
